Henderson, Alice H.
Henderson, Donald Gene
Carl Maria von Weber : a guide to research
New York: Garland, 1990, 385 p.

This is what Donald Gene Henderson had to say:

Comments on the contradictory interpretations of the meaning of Der Freischutz. Contends that the contrast between static tableaux and dynamic action provides interest and that Weber's music and dramatic decisions impart a sense of movement in the direction of a goal. Disputes the idea that the opera represents a mood of national misery but argues that hope and possibility of change are inherent in the music.
