Henderson, Donald Gene
Carl Maria von Weber : a guide to research
New York: Garland, 1990, 385 p.

This is what Donald Gene Henderson had to say:

A carefully selected and edited publication by the curator of the Weberiana-Sammlung of Weber's letters to his fiance Caroline Brandt in the three years before their marriage in November 1817. Includes all the available letters from 1814, 1815, and 1816, but only half of the 1817 letters because of space limitations. (A typescript of the remaining letters is in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek.) The earlier letters were written while Weber was director of the opera in Prague and include information on Weber's trips to Berlin. The 1817 letters were written in Dresden and describe his new duties as Kapellmeister of the German opera and the beginning of the composition of Der Freischutz. Includes an introduction to each of the four years the letters cover, a chronological summary of events during Weber's life, bibliographical information on all other previously published Weber letters, and indices of Weber's compositions and persons mentioned in the letters. The letters are annotated to explain references which might not be clear. Altogether the editor has added 180 pages of commentary to the 460 pages of letters, most of which have never been published before.
