One of a series of popular biographies of musicians by Hocker. Letters by Weber and documents relating to his compositions are interspersed with a chronological narrative of his life. Musical compositions are not analyzed, and little attention is given to his songs or instrumental works. The circumstances surrounding the writing and reception of the three last operas receive the most attention. Appendices include a table of monetary values in Germany and England during the early nineteenth century, with accompanying information on Weber's income and expenses.
